Dreaming of Teeth
From a young age, our mouths and teeth are a source of mystery and pain.
From babies teething to the quarter brought by the tooth fairy to a grandmother’s
dentures, teeth represent growth and change in our lives. Dreams of losing your
teeth are often said to stem from the feeling of powerlessness or inability to
communicate that can sometimes result from abrupt or uncontrollable changes in our
lives. Though teeth are so important to our everyday lives, many people give them
little thought until there is a problem.
My current series of drawings present abstract, stylized versions of mouths and teeth.
These swarms of disembodied mouths are reminiscent of a cloud of bees, while displaying
the menacing grin of a clown, the bared teeth of an angry dog. The primitive, harsh
strokes of paint and graphite signify the primal emotions of hunger and rage that are
associated with that most fundamental of body parts, our teeth.
